South African runner Oscar Pistorius after his appeal to Pretoria’s court wasconvicted of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius is now under a home arrest, but in nearest future he will start his longest distance.
Prosecutor, who read out a verdict to World-class athlete last Thursday named his story “a kind of Shakespeare’s tragedy”. Most likely, Hollywood producers will never avoid such an exciting scenario that was created by the destiny instead of them. A man of spirit, a sprinter with no legs that inspired the entire planet turns out a murderer.
On a Valentine’s Day (14th of February, 2013) Pistorius shot his girlfriend through a closed door of the bathroom. First judgement said that Reeva Steenkamp was killed accidentally, so Pistorius was put under house arrest. However, Steenkamp’s parents appealed to the court and a minimum punishment for Oscar under another Criminal Rule was 15 years in prison.
One of the journalists tells us, “Pistorius an I know each other a bit. As well as hundreds of other journalists, I took an interview from him and met him at the stadiums number of times. I was looking into his excited eyes, when he managedto reach semi-finals of Olympic Games in London. I nodded him when I met him in the street of Degu back in 2011. Oscar used to be a kind and smiling person. He was staying on his legs that hurt so much for hours answering thousands of dumb questions after his runs. He was patiently explaining that crooked prostheses were not an advantage upon healthy athletes. He had no forbidden topics that may offend. He was a knight, musketeer or even a hero – quite, moderate and noble. Pistorius became an icon of a battle of handicapped people for their rights all over the world not in vain. The most beautiful women of South Africa (including Steenkamp) wanted to meet him, a disabled person with no legs.
Details of that scary night on 14th of February, 2013 showed Pistorius from a completely different point of view. Suspicious, quick-tempered and uncontrolled man.“ Making a few shots from a gun through closed door, he knew that it would kill anyone behind it and shot anyway. It was a roulette game with a human life at stake,” judge finished her line, changing a prosecution from accidental to on-purpose. And there is no way to argue with that. National hero, who was carrying a flag of his country during Ending Ceremony of Olympic Games in London turned out a murderer.
Pistorius was crying in the court a year and a half ago after he saw a pictures of him and Reeva. This time, he didn’t come to the process. His case opened up the entire list of social problems in South Africa, such as high criminal level (Pistorius had a reason to be afraid of night robbers), illegal weapons everywhere, social treatments and racism.
But the main reason is a bit different. Admiring feats of another disabled Olympic hero, naming him brave and strong, we should remember he’s still a real person with regular human problems. Physical disabilities does not make him different for all of us. Dope is widespread in Paralympic sports as well as in a regular sports, so we’re not talking about it. We can’t blame heroes for fraud?
There is always a difference between and ad banner and contents. But when it becomes enormous, it will definitely blow up, and some die under the rubbles.
